I love bookkeeping, seriously I do, but that wasn’t always the case.

Over ten years ago I started my first business after finishing my Holistic Health Certification in health, nutrition, & lifestyle at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I had no idea that opening a small health coaching practice would lead me down such a weaving path full of twists and turns.

I was shocked to find there was so much I didn’t know about running a business. Learning all the nuances of how to run a business & keep good financial records was a whole new world. My story here is not unique, I know many others start a business to share their creativity, talents or skills with the world… they want to help people & make the world a more beautiful place. Business owners I speak with rarely set out to become experts at spreadsheets, finances & accounting software. They just do they best they can because they know they are “supposed” to.
Yeah, me too.

I began pursuing bookkeeping originally because I knew it was a skill I needed. The back end stuff, the not fun business stuff of tracking, keeping records, what's a write off, what's not, filing taxes, all of those aspects of owning a business were such a struggle for me all those years ago. I had zero processes in place to help hold me accountable to keeping that part of my business up to date. Sadly, for a time I just ignored it and pretended it didn't exist. Then tax time would roll around and I’d be a panicked mess.

Overwhelmed, I was so confused, never quite sure I was doing things right. In the back of my mind there was this fear that I was doing something incorrectly and it was going to get me into legal trouble somehow. I just didn’t know how to get it all into order. It was the biggest stress factor for me as a first time business owner.

So I went back to school, and along the way I realized I’m actually very naturally inclined to do this work.
(fun fact: I love lists, and organizing data, lol) However, like any new skill, it was confusing until I learned how to do it. And like any new skill you have to practice to continue to improve. I realize now that one of the things that really held me back was a fear of asking for help, and always thinking I had to “do it all myself”, or feeling embarrassed about it.

I understand deeply the struggles of being a business owner.

What are the actual steps and processes needed to get from this place of confusion and overwhelm, to this place of organization and thriving? Well that looks a little different for everyone. Like nutrition, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to how you organize your life, or your finances.
